Skin Surgery

Many people have problems with their skin which cause concern or  problems, for example skin tags, cysts and moles.

These can catch on clothing or irritate and many patients request removal of such lesions for non-cosmetic reasons.

These can be removed under local anaesthetic with minor discomfort, usually with good cosmetic results and minimal scarring being visible. Mole removal can also be carried out if there is any doubt about their innocence.

What is skin surgery?

Skin surgery means the surgical removal of skin lesions using either a traditional scalpel or a modern radiosurgical or laser scalpel.

Lesions include:

•      Moles
•      Benign skin lesions
•      Skin tags
•      Verrucae and warts
•      In-growing toenails
•      Sebaceous cysts
•      Fatty lumps

What happens?

The lesion be removed is usually marked out using a special marking pen (purple) and the area is cleaned with an antiseptic wash.

Next the doctor will inject a local anaesthetic around the are to treated. This might sting a little for a few seconds but then you should feel no more pain.

The area around the lesion may be covered in a sterile paper cloth to keep bugs away from the area.

The doctor will then use a scalpel, either a blade or one of the modern alternative cutting tools to remove the lesion. The piece which has been cut out is usually sent to the laboratory to be looked at under the microscope as it is important to ensure that the lesion was not a skin cancer.

The skin is then stitched back together using sterile thread. These stitches are normally removed in 5-10 days depending on the site of removal.
