Chemical peels improve the appearance of the skin. They remove blemishes, pigmentation marks and superficial scars as well as reversing the effects of smoking and sun damage. Peels can also be used to treat acne and even some acne scarring.

Chemical peels work by increasing the removal of old, dead skin cells and promoting their replacement with new more healthy looking, smoother and less marked skin.

They can be used for the whole face or just problem areas such as around the eyes or mouth.

What do Chemical Peels do?
What can be treated?

·      Fine lines and wrinkles

·      Sun damaged skin

·      Acne & acne scarring

·      Superficial age spots

·      Hyperpigmentation

The technique varies depending upon the type of peel you are having. Usually there is some preparation which can last a few days to several weeks. This is usually some form of home care.

The peel itself can take from 15 to 40 minutes and involves applying the product to the area to be treated. The product is then left in place for a variable period of time and afterwards post peel treatments are prescribed to improve the effects of the treatment, reduce discomfort and promote the growth of the new healthy skin below.

The “downtime” also varies depending upon the individual treatment and depth of the peel. Your doctor will discuss with you the best treatment for you and the likely downtime and other important information.

What does it involve?
Types of Chemical Peel

There are lots of different makes of chemical peel but essentially there are three types.

Superficial:

These are combinations of lactic acid, glycolic acid, alphahydroxy acids and others which are applied to remove to upper layer of the skin (epidermis)

Medium:

These usually contain trichloroacetic acid and are left in contact with the skin for a few minutes before being neutralized. These usually peel down through the epidermis and into the upper part of the dermis.

Deep:

Deep peels usually use phenol. These can be used to peel down to the deeper layers of the dermis and may require medication for discomfort.

Generally the deeper the peel the more dramatic and longer lasting the effects but this goes with more downtime and discomfort
